Borrego Ranch Shuts Down
January 9th, 2010Happy New Year.
2010 opens with the news that the Borrego Ranch Resort and Spa (formerly known as La Casa Del Zorro) has closed. This historic property was acquired in December 2007 by Sherman Oaks based GH Capital from the Copley Press which had owned the property since 1960. Greg Perlman, principal of GH Capital has been looking for additional investors to keep the resort open. The Borrego Sun (also a former Copley property) reports that one of those considering buying the property is Sun publisher Patrick Meehan.
Based on Mr. Meehan’s operation of the Sun, it seems he would be an excellent owner of this most important, and historic property in the Borrego community.

Well it is never nice to see a business fail in town and I wish the best for all of the employees but cant say that I am too sad to see the place go. The Borrego Ranch did itself in from the beginning, alienating the community and failing to embrace the historic nature of the Zorro.
Rather than capitalize on a unique historic property they elected to rebrand the place as some type of pseudo, Orange County meets Palm Desert day spa.
It seems that Mr. Meehan has done a fantastic job with the Sun and think it would be great to see him bring some of the spark back to that property.
Here is to a new beginning in 2010. It is a wonderful place and in the right hands it will shine again.

I agree that it is isn’t nice to see business fail in town. This past Modernism Tour was our first time out to Borrego but it hasn’t been our last. We love the town and all it’s Modern glory. We found The Borrego Ranch to be much too expensive and unfriendly for the town as a whole. We’ll be hoping to see a new caretaker with friendlier ways and rates. That is what keeps out-of-towners coming back to enjoy the great town after all. Fingers are crossed! Great site by the way!
