We Couldn’t Agree More…

May 2nd, 2009

Our third Borrego Springs Mid-Century Modern architectural tour has come and gone. It was a fantastic weekend (exhaustingly good) and frankly I’ve been struggling a bit with how to bring you the details and adequately express why these tours are so important.  However when I opened the most recent issue of the Borrego Sun and found the following editorial (April 30th 2009, page 6) that very succinctly and eloquently sums up the very reasons why we go through such effort:

“Borrego’s future lies in its past

The third tour focused on Borrego’s mid-century modern residential architecture brought a whopping 275 people to the valley April 24-25, many of whom had never visited here before and were reportedly blown away by the valley’s dramatic desert setting and the historic uniqueness of the carefully designed built environment.

Borrego Modern III was packed with visitors from Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs, San Francisco and from as far away as Idaho. These architecture aficionados put value on the 1950s-1970s modern design that embraces the connection between the indoor and outdoor living space with minimalist techniques. That technique was showcased with the opening of six local homes designed by architects William Kesling, Henry Hester, William Krisel, William Perry and Richard Zerbe. The architect of one tour residence, built in 1956 as one of the first home ad de Anza Country Club, is still unknown.

Tour attendees were equally as excited to just drive by the valley’s Cliff May homes and to see the modern architecture evident in many of downtown’s buildings from the closed Borrego Valley Foods store (built in 1949) to the Borrego Appliance building (1961) to the 1947 Quonset hut that until recently was home of the Red Ocotillo. What to some locals could be considered eyesores are actually hidden architectural gems that could put Borrego Springs on the map as a mid-century modern hamlet.

Borregans interested in increasing tourism, promoting the valley and keeping Borrego’s small-town charm, should pay attention to the interest in this unique style of architecture. The tour coordinators pointed out that the declining economy has taken a toll on the number of people coming out for historical home tours in larger reasons. In fact, the Save Our Heritage Organisation was hoping for just 100 people for last weekend’s Borrego event.  With the turnout almost triple that expectation, the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce should be hightailing it to promote Borrego mid-century modern history to the masses and to educate locals on the appeal.

There should be no more debate about what Borrego’s style is and what it should be. Borrego Springs is modern and modern is the new desert chic.”

We here at BorregoModern.com would like to thank all of our homeowners, volunteers, photographers and staffs at SOHO and the Borrego Chamber of Commerce for making the tour such a success. Special thanks are also due Todd Pitman and Carmen Pauli for their research, writing and program design expertise.

We here at BorregoModern.com would also like to hear your thoughts on the tour and the greater issue of preserving and promoting Borrego’s mid-century modern history.

BorregoModern.com Update

February 11th, 2009

BorregoModern.com has been updated:

- William Kesling and the Borrego Springs Desert Club now has its own section in “The Design” - check out the picture circa 1948 of the Borrego landmark under construction.

-We’ve added a Media Section (not just for members of the Fourth and Fifth Estates) to showcase two period movies that were produced to promote Borrego Springs. Featured are: “Borrego Springs California” and “A New Way of Life” and both are amazing. The quality is a bit rough in places (these were faded 16mm films, projected on a screen, recorded onto VHS, VHS dub from master, VHS dub to DVD and finally to web). The original films have disappeared and we need to thank Sam Webb for having the foresite to realize that these were worth saving.  Sam at one point worked for the Borrego Chamber of Commerce and found the old 16mm films on a shelf. He has, through the Borrego Springs Civic Foundation’s Annual Preservation Days, shown them to hundreds of Borrego school children. Sam was kind enough to provide a VHS copy to your editor who is pleased to make them available on the internet.  In my Borrego research there are mentions of the films being shown on television stations around the country during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. “Borrego Springs California” was produced in 1957, and “A New Way of Life” early 1960’s. I am hoping that a less-faded copy of the original films will surface and I will be able to make a direct-digital version. If you run across one please let me know.

Breaking News - Desert Club Architect Discovered

December 17th, 2008

A mystery appears to have been solved.

Its been confirmed that William Kesling, is the architect who designed the Desert Club.

Kesling, who had gained notoriety in the Los Angeles area, came to La Jolla following World War II. It was believed by Borregans that a La Jolla firm was the one to do the Desert Club design.

The Desert Club is currently for sale. Elizabeth Courtier of Willis Allen La Jolla, the listing agent, says there is a picture of the building under construction, with Kesling standing in front, in the book Kesling Modern Structures, by Patrick Pascal.
